Teena Gates inspires FAB ladies

to put one foot in front of the other

On a morning when health and well being was the order of the day, the inimitable Teena Gates told guests of FAB Waterford that putting on foot in front of the other is the only way to succeed in life.

Her mantra for many years, and also the title of her book, Teena’s is a story of sheer grit and determination, having lost 12 stone and going on to climb Everest.

Teena shared her fascinating story at ‘Brand U’, an event organised by FAB Waterford and sponsored by Waterford City Enterprise Board at the Athenaeum House Hotel on Thursday last, February 28th.

Designed to inspire women in business, the event began with a style segment, with a ten minute makeup lesson by Sinead Sullivan, Makeup Waterford, who showed that ‘putting your face on’ in the morning can be quick and easy if you use the right products.

Johann Crowe from Zen Hair took to the floor next with a quick demonstration of how to glam up your hair in under ten minutes if you’re going from the office to a function. She also announced the opening of her new Dry Dock Station at the Arundle Lane salon, where you can pop in, having washed your hair yourself, without an appointment and have a 15 minute turn around for just 12euros, perfect as a pick me up during the day, or for ladies who have a lunch meeting or function to attend after work!

Of course no styling segment would be the same without some fashion and Beat 102 103 presenter and fashion fanatic Teresanne O’Reilly brought along her picks of the town, insisting you can shop locally and bag great bargains. She showcased Spring Summer trends from Red Lane, Tramore, Orchid Boutique and Next.

Dr Eithne Brenner was also on hand to speak about health related issues, while special guest on the morning Tony Kelly told the ladies how taking part in the WLRfm Shapeup Challenge has changed his life.

After a delicious breakfast and some red carpet snaps, Teena took to the floor and told how she battled back from serious illness to tackle morbid obesity, losing 12 stone, which is more than her current body weight.
Checking in at a tiny 5 foot 2ins and a massive 23 stone, Teena was walking with a stick and staring death in the face when a doctor's grim diagnosis shocked her into a decision that would change her life. A little more than a year later she had trekked to Everest Base camp and beyond, to climb to the summit of Kala Patthar Mountain and Island Peak in the Himalayas of Eastern Nepal, topping out with a technical climb to 20,305ft. In doing so she proved to herself that you can tackle apparently insurmountable challenges and even in these difficult economic times find yourself somewhat stunned by your own success and sitting close to the top of the world.
Speaking after the event, FAB Chairperson Lynda Lawton of Lawton Media said: “This has been our most successful event to date and while we are all women in business, it just goes to show that a little bit of fashion and glamour is still important to us. We are all full of great intentions in January but our best laid plans are usually gone by the wayside come the end of February. This event was designed to give us that extra push we need, not just to succeed in business, but also to look after ourselves. From the style advice, to health topics and of course inspiration from both Teena and Tony, Waterford better watch out, there are lots of determined women after leaving the Athenaeum House Hotel with a new and improved fighting spirit!”

Teena Gates joins FAB for ‘Brand U’ event

FAB Waterford is delighted to announce that they will be joined by the inspirational Teena Gates at their February event in the Athenaeum House Hotel.

Thursday, February 28th, is shaping up to be a morning of glamour, well being and inspiration as the FAB team bring ‘Brand U’ to the hotel from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

Designed to inspire women in business, the event will feature hair, makeup and fashion trends for Spring/Summer 2013, medical advice on health and well being with Dr Eithne Brenner, local inspiration from the WLRfm Shape-up challengers and the key note speaker will be Teena Gates, 98fm Head of news, who lost a whopping 12 stone.

Teena has spent two decades as a working journalist in Dublin with 98FM and Denis O'Brien's Communicorp Group, and before that RTE. She is a former radio lecturer at BCFE Ballyfermot College of Further Education and is a founder-member and current director of Learning Waves, the industry training body for Independent Broadcasters in Ireland.

Against the odds, Teena battled back from serious illness to tackle morbid obesity, losing 12 stone, which is more than her current body weight.

Her first book "One Foot in Front of the Other" is the story of discovering that you are ill, realising that you can change your life and grabbing at health and joy against all the odds. It's the motivational, inspirational journey of a young woman who was resigned to leaving life behind until a spark lit up a desire to break free. It's how that passion was fuelled by a wish to say thanks to the world and do something positive for a group of children she had never met.

Her’s is a story of pain, of hope, of friendship and of how far you can go by putting one foot in front of the other.

Chairperson of FAB Waterford, Lynda Lawton says: “I’m really looking forward to this event, I think it’s going to be one of our most exciting and inspirational. We couldn’t do it without the help of Waterford City Enterprise Board and I hope anybody who is looking for a bit of confidence in both business and in their personal lives will come out and enjoy it.”

FAB Waterford is a new and exciting networking organisation in Waterford for Females at Business and aims to connect experienced business professionals with those looking to start out, along with offering mentoring, education and networking opportunities.

Tickets for this truly inspiration event, which includes delicious treats by the Athenaeum House Hotel, are €10 for members and €20 for non members. The event is open to both men and women.
